In neodobravanje.

Naj vam to povem v dveh delih.

Letalska družba in čas potovanja
Let traja dobrih pet ur, postanek v Dubaju štiri ure, in nato še šest do Bangkoka.

Malo večji izziv je bil “meal time”. Ko stevardese postrežejo hrano, imaš pladenj pred sabo in z otrokom v naročju in grabežljivimi prstki, je nemogoče pojesti v vsem svetem miru.

Izračunala sem kdaj in koliko bo Polina jedla in vzela vse potrebno sabo. Midva sva imela termovko z vročo vodo, čaj v otroški steklenički, jogurt, sadje, rižoto in posodice z mlečno formulo in gresom. Tudi kreme in podobno so prešle kontrolo.

Menjava pleničk
Zakaj omenjam to posebej? Ker me je presenetilo.

Enako sem storila s plenicami in hladilno kremo za ritko. Zaloge plenic nisem vzela vse, ker bi zavzele preveč prostora. Raje sem vzela vso potrebno hrano. Ker smo potovali v tropsko vreme, z oblačili nisem pretiravala. Raje sem vzela detergent za pranje in obleke nekajkrat oprala tam. Tri tanke dolge in dvoje kratke hlače. Tri jopice. Vso potrebno kozmetiko in domačo lekarno.

When I mentioned we were going on holiday in Thailand with our nine-month-old baby girl, I didn’t get happy faces. To travel so far, on a plane, to a tropical heat and to a hectic city like Bangkok, was being questioned by everyone. Those things crossed my mind too, but I felt it could be done. Babies travel all the time, babies live in tropical places and hectic cities. I don’t see why ours should be any different.

So now that we survived holidays in Thailand, I can give a few tips about our travel, if you’ll find it useful.

Choosing the carrier and time of flight
We live in Ljubljana Slovenia, and there are no direct flights to Bangkok, so we have to rely on nearby cities that our carrier of choice flies from. Emirates and Qatar fly nearest from Zagreb, Croatia, and that is only 130 km drive away, which is a very convenient starting point. We considered all the commute we had to take. We chose time of flight that is suitable for Polina’s daily routine, so she would have the least awake time and so that we start our commute in descent hours, like not having to get up to early. We flew in the afternoon and night. We flew from Zagreb, to Dubai and then to Bangkok. It took us 12 hours of flight time to get there.

At the airport
Families with small children are allowed take special waiting lines and are treated with priority. Which means shorter waiting time at customs and other airport lines. Also, young families board on airplanes with priority.
If you are traveling with a stroller, it can be checked for free. You can use your stroller until you step on a first flight, then you get it back at your final destination. At Dubai airport, there are Maclaren airport strollers available free of charge.
In Dubai, we had a four-hour layover, so we checked in Marhaba lounge. If you are traveling with a baby, it is a comfortable thing to take advantage of airport lounges, because all the convenience is at hand. You pay a certain fee, but then you can enjoy free drinks and food, nice atmosphere, nicer toilets, children play area, charging docks, newspapers, magazines and also smoking lounge. If you own a Diners card, you can check in certain airport lounges for free.

On the flight
If you fly with a baby, chances are, you will be assigned to a bassinet seat automatically. You will be asked if you would like a bassinet for your baby. Bassinets are great, if your baby wants to sleep in them, otherwise they come in handy as an extra storage space, especially when you wait for the food trays to be taken away and for all that extra blankets that seem to be everywhere. Children under two years of age fly for a fraction of the ticket price, but they don’t have their own seat. Polina was still small enough, so that flying with her on our lap was comfortable. Babies do get a bassinet, but it fits only a small baby. Whenever there is seat belt sign on, babies have to be taken out of bassinets, so even if babies sleep in them, their bassinet time may be short. Polina still breastfeeds, so it was mostly convenient, that she slept on my lap.

Food
Whatever food you think the baby will need and want to eat, take it with you. Baby food on airplanes consists of vegetable or fruit jar baby food, which to my and Polina’s taste, is nonexistent. For families traveling with babies, special rules for taking food and liquids apply, so don’t limit yourself to not taking things with you. What I did was, I put baby milk formula in powder and some instant grits (Milupa) or formula plus rice flakes in a disposable plastic cup, so whenever Polina would get hungry, I would just pore in some hot water and some banana and she had a meal. I threw away the plastic cup, so we didn’t bother with washing and cleaning after. You can always ask any café for some hot water to prepare baby food. They should not decline your wish. We also took fruits, yogurt, hot water in flask and even some fried rice I prepared at home.
I also took all the baby food that I thought I won’t be able to get in Thailand, or that I didn’t want to bother and search for, when we get to our destination. That was grits, rice flakes and baby formula. I calculated how much of each food I should take and put in in the checked luggage.

Changing diapers
Why am I mentioning this? Well, it is a thing that took me by surprise, as I didn’t think Polina would be uncomfortable being changed on changing surfaces that were available in baby changing areas and wouldn’t want to lay down, even though I padded the station and cushioned her head. So, putting on a nappy was challenging. Partly also because on airplanes, the toilets only fit one person at the time, so I could only change her by myself. Airport changing stations are located in lavatories, so help is also limited. Best solution, that I figured during holiday, was to have diaper pants instead of regular diapers. Diaper pants could be put on more easily, if the baby wants to stand up, all the time.

Packing
I take packing for tropical climates as a challenge to travel super light. Over the years, I managed to learn a few things about ditching the unnecessary, planning outfits per days and occasions and washing clothes opposed to taking extra. I applied same principles for packing for Polina, so for two weeks of tropical weather I took 3 long sleeve bodies, 5 short sleeved, 3 long pants, 2 pairs of shorts, three long sleeve tops, a hat, two swaddles, a few pairs of socks. I washed everything about three times we were there. I packed a few favorite toys, as I reckoned, we would get toys on airplanes and we bought a few there as well. I packed half the amount of diapers she would use, but ended up bringing more home, as we bought a lot of Merries diaper pants, they are so good. Thailand, specially Bangkok, is a great shopping destination so I took that into account and didn’t worry if I didn’t pack it all.

A me je prevzelo.

Boljša različica naše Odprte kuhne in Artmarketa združeno. Bungalov šmungalov, kokos šmokos, Hua Hin je the best.

Ravno prav za smisel življenja.

I had doubts about Hua Hin, considering so many great Thai islands, with bungalow-on-the-beach and is-the-coconut-going-to-fall-on-my-head type of scenery, but Hua Hin isn’t that far from it. Well, the coconuts down may be free, but the bungalow we found, is a 12K set back. Other than that, it is a perfect destination for a first time travel with a baby, if you want some beach time and don’t want to do all the commuting, that a way to a perfect little island requires.

Hua Hin is a three hour ride from Bangkok. It has a nice stretch of clean beaches. Great shopping, great food sceene, and, if you believe it, no “waaan’ a massage”, “pedicure manicure”, “sarong sarong” beach hassle.

Every end of the week, a famous Cicada market is on. An upscale version of the Thai food market you would know, attracting large crowds. For three days in a row, there was so much we could eat and luckily, our hotel was just across the street.

Izpolnila sva mojo dolgoletno željo in si v Mandarin Oriental hotelu privoščila popoldansko čajanko in ujela Mysore uro joge. Izpustila sva peklensko vročo kitajsko četrt in kraljičino fotografsko razstavo, ker v tempu nisva želela pretravati.

If I went to Bangkok for a millionth time, there would still be something to come back to. By now, I figured, that’s how all my travels end up: I get second chances. Like having high tea at Mandarin Oriental, because last time, the Authors lounge was being renovated, or like catching a Mysore yoga class at AYBKK, or even having a go at the street food, because I was always limiting the chances of a bad stomach. I know next time, I’ll be having Mizu Shingen Mochi at Double Dogs in Chinatown, spend a day at Bangkok Arts and Cultural Centre and try a sweet potato latte.

We spend seven nights in Bangkok (no, didn’t crumble) and took a very leisurely pace. We set ourselves to enjoy the city as neither of us did before. In low tempo and and and, with our nine month old baby girl. Did some shopping, went and feast on Thai food a lot, enjoyed the sun, enjoyed the warm weather and left some stuff for second chances.
